Child Enthusiast to Adult Pessimist

“The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.” -Aldous Huxley

When exactly to we transition from child enthusiast to adult pessimist.

No, we don’t all do that. But a lot do. I know I did.

I often look at my children in awe of their innocence, in awe of their enthusiasm for life. They are excited about everything…whether it’s a trip to the grocery store or a trip to Disneyland. They are enthusiastic about learning, seeing, feeling, sharing. All of it is valued by them.

I have to go to the grocery store and think about the money I have to spend that I really don’t have enough of. I think about the list I have to make, which means there is food I will need to cook. And Disneyland. Lines…people…crying kids.

WHY do thoughts turn negative? WHY can’t we remain enthusiasts for life and all it has to offer?

Adulting is tough. But it’s also beautiful. We have the ability to create our life. Why don’t more of us create a life we are passionate about living?

“Enthusiasm is a state of mind. It inspires action and is the most contagious of all emotions.” – Napoleon Hill

  1. This reminds me of a short video I watched recently.. which I unfortunately forgot the title of. Anyway, people working are all grey, and the son is color yellow. He like drawing colorful stuff, but his dad was telling him to do schoolworks.. instead of using his imagination. He is encouraged to write within the lines.. In time, the son was losing his color too.

I guess it’s something like that.. we tend to be more focused on what SHOULD be than what could be or what we can do… it somehow makes us less of who we really are..

Although duties and chores are important.. we should always have time for the inner child within us. Appreciate the little things. Enjoy the moments.

    1. I love that! And seeing it that way is really impactful. I want to try and find that video. Thank you for sharing that with me! And you’re absolutely right. We all need to make time for our own inner child and be present in every moment.
